Nelson Police said a no-liquor function held at The Royal proved to be a jackpot for a local bottle picker.

The event was held Saturday night at the Baker Street location and dubbed as an “all age’s no liquor party”.

However, some who attended the function felt a few pints of the bubbly — before and outside during the party — was necessary.

The result saw officers busy with numerous cases of drinking in public, carrying open liquor and minors in possession of liquor throughout the evening.  The outside drinking led to an abundance of littering — cans and broken bottles in the streets and alleys.

One male was caught urinating in shrubbery beside the roadway.

Tickets were issued in each case where appropriate and the Nelson Police hope this will serve as a deterrent for those that want to take their drinking to the streets.

Fines range from $115 for public intoxication, $230 for consuming or carrying open liquor, to $500 for trying to re-enter a bar after being asked to leave.

On a positive note, the local bottle picker managed to gather two full blue recycling bags of cans and bottles around the 300 Block Baker St in a short time.

In total during the summer-like weekend, NPD responded to 44 calls.
