Kannibelles, Dam City Rollers roll to victory during exhibition twin bill at Selkirk College
It’s obvious from the weekend results there’s some pretty good skill on the local roller derby circuit.
West Kootenay teams, the All-Star juggernaut known as the Kootenay Kannibelles and Dam City Rollers out of Castlegar, pounded visiting teams from Spokane and Kamloops during a weekend twin bill at the Selkirk College gymnasium in the Sunflower City.
Kannibelles walked all over the Spokannibals from the Lilac City 299-78 in the feature match Saturday at Selkirk College.
In the early match, Dam City topped the 400-point mark en route to a lopsided 436-132 victory over Tournament City Dolls from Spoolmak Country.
“From pretty early in the bout it became obvious that the mismatched team of black, blue and purple jerseys playing as the Spokannibals were not going to be taking away the victory in this bout, and the rest of the bout played out as such,” said a West Kootenay Roller Derby League spokesperson.
“The Kannibelles kept their penalties down and executed some new strategies they have been working on as they put on a display of composed and efficient derby.”
The Kannibelles is an All-Star side consisting of players from the five WKRDL teams — Valley Vendettas, Salmo Babes of Brutality, Nelson Killjoys, Dam City Rollers and Rossland/Trail Roller Girls.
The squad enters the summer with a 7-3 record and a sixth-place ranking in the recent National Roller Derby poll.
In the opening tilt, Dam City proved practice makes perfect as the hosts totally dominated the Kamloops squad.
Dam City enjoyed a 300-50 halftime lead.
The WKRDL is off for a few weeks before resuming June 22 in Nelson at the NDCC Arena.
Dam City meets Valley Vendettas while the Killjoys of Nelson host Salmo’s Babes of Brutality.
The following week in Trail, Rossland/Trail Roller Girls host an exhibition bout Saturday, June 29 at the Cominco Arena.
