A woman bit off more than she could chew, landing in police cells after a spirited encounter with officers and staff Thursday (August 15) morning at the Hume Hotel Spirit Bar in Nelson.

The call was one of 96 Nelson Police dispatchers received during the past week as the warm weather continues to bring out more than just tourists to the Heritage City.

Thursday’s encounter started at 1:49 a.m. when Spirit Bar staff Spirit Bar called NPD to request assistance with an unruly customer trying to get back into their establishment.

The female was taken into custody after assaulting a Spirit Bar staff member by biting him.

Members and bar staff worked together to safely remove her from the area and then she was transported to NPD cells.

During the arrest several associates of the 23-year-old tourist tried to interfere with the police and staff but were dispersed without further incident.

The woman was held until sober and is schedule to appear in Nelson Court to answer to a charge of assault causing bodily harm and attempting to re-enter a licensed premise once removed.
