Nelson Police and Fire Departments were kept busy early Tuesday morning, safely talking down an emotionally distraught woman from on top of the Big Orange Bridge structure.

The call, coming in at 1:25 a.m., was one of 75 NPD officers dealt with during the past week.

Police received the call when a passing motorist reported being made suspicious by a woman’s sandal falling from atop the Nelson Orange Bridge.

When police arrived on scene, officers found the emotionally distraught female perched and walking along the top of the bridge structure.

Nelson Fire Department was called to the scene with a ladder truck and the Nelson Police Boat was deployed.

After lengthy and successful negotiations, the woman agreed to be brought to safety by the Nelson Fire Department and transported to Kootenay Lake Regional Hospital for further assessment.

Madchild concert brings out the NPD officers

Monday, outside the former Royal Hotel was a long lineup of fans eager to watch the performance of Madchild (rap artist) at a downtown “all ages” venue.

The performance also kept NPD officers busy policing the event.

NPD said there as more than a dozen liquor seizures were conducted by officers along with a few arrests including a 22-year-old Fruitvale man for Obstructing a Police Officer after he was found consuming liquor in a public place (downtown) and then provided a false name to police.

The man was released on an Appearance Notice and scheduled to appear in Nelson Court on October 2.

Also, a 19-year-old Trail man was arrested for Intoxication in a Public Place after being evicted from a downtown Hotel establishment.

The man was lodged in NPD cells until morning.
