Two young Nelson children make alarming discovery

Nelson Police report that two youngsters made an alarming find while playing on the sidewalk near their home Wednesday.
The children aged three and six, were playing with sidewalk chalk on a walkway in front of the family home when the two found a bag of containing white powder on the ground.
“The (older) child, being wise beyond his years, took the powder to his parent,” said Nelson Police Department Sargent Brian Webber in a statement.
Webber said the understandably upset parent brought the substance to police as they suspected that the small bag contained illicit street drugs.
“The Nelson Police Department tested the powder and discovered that the child had found approximately $100 worth of powder cocaine,” Sgt. Webber explained.
“Needless to say, had the children been curious and ingested the cocaine this media release would have taken a decidedly different tone,” Sgt. Webber added.
Nelson Police want to warn the public about illicit drugs.
Not only are street drugs dangerous for little bodies but prescription drugs found in many households can also be deadly.
High-speed chase ends safely with arrest of suspect
Nelson police were involved in a high-speed car chase through the Uphill district of Nelson before arresting a man driving without a license Tuesday.
The incident unfolded when, driving on patrol near Gyro Park, one of the officers noticed the driver of a suspicious vehicle had his license suspended.
While driving in the opposite direction, the man attempted to hide his identity from police by shielding his face with his hand.
But the attempted act did not fool police, who quickly turned the cruiser around to try stop the vehicle.
The subsequent chase took police through the Uphill residential neighbourhood at high speeds.
Officers vigorously tracked the suspect with safety of the public as their primary concern before spotting the vehicle in Uphill as the driver attempted to flee from police.
After taking a turn at high speed the driver made an abrupt turn into a driveway, narrowly missing a private vehicle parked in the drive.
Police continued pursuit, discovering the vehicle a short time later with the driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, still seated behind the steering wheel.
The man was taken into custody without further attempts to flee from police. The suspect faces possible charges of driving while prohibited, driving without due care and attention.
The vehicle he was driving at the time was impounded. The matter is still under investigation.
