RDCK Household Hazardous Waste Roundup gets hazardous waste off the streets

The Regional District of Central Kootenay says there’s a whole lot less of hazardous waste circulating in closets and garages in the region following a very successful Household Hazardous Waste Roundup events throughout the region.
The events, hosted in Castlegar, Creston, Kaslo, Nelson, Nakusp and Silverton during September, were a success a more than 780 residents dropping off hazardous items such as mercury, flammables, acids, and solvents.
“These roundups are not only important for the environment by keeping toxic and hazardous waste out of our landfills, but they educate residents about product stewardship programs available,” said RDCK Chair Karen Hamling.
Product Stewards also participated in the events, providing an opportunity for residents to drop off items such as paint, oil, electronics and light bulbs depending on the event.
At the six roundup events the RDCK collected:
- 4950Kg of TV’s, computers, and e-waste
- 747Kg of small household appliances
- 3 truck loads of hazardous materials
- More than 8000L worth of paint containers and paint products
- 171 fluorescent tubes and 186 light bulbs
“By participating in these roundups we are demonstrating to Product Stewards that there is a real need for the depots in our communities,” Hamling explained.
“We will continue to lobby Stewards to increase their presence in rural areas.”
Residents who missed the roundups are asked to look for the nearest product stewardship depots.
