Hiker dies after fall while climbing Gimli Peak in Valhalla Provincial Park

A 23-year-old hiker from Quebec has died in a climbing accident Tuesday in the Valhalla Provincial Park near Winlaw.
Slocan RCMP said Tuesday at approximately 2:51 p.m. the detachment responded to a report of a female hiker who had fallen approximately 100 feet down a cliff on Gimli Peak.
Gimli Peak is located on edge of Valhalla Provincial Park.
RCMP said the victim had been hiking with two friends at Gimli Peak.
“One witness scaled down the cliff to render assistance while the other witness hiked 2.5 hours to contact emergency services for assistance,” the RCMP release said.
RCMP said Emergency Health Services (EHS) activated Search and Rescue upon being contacted by the witness.
“Air Ambulance along with two Search and Rescue helicopters were dispatched to the location. The victim was located deceased from the fall.”
Nelson SAR said this was a difficult recovery in complex terrain.

The Slocan Lake RCMP continues to assist the BC Coroners Service with their investigation into the woman’s death.
