RCMP in the Boundary report a man was shot during a police incident in the industrial park near Donaldson Drive and 75 Avenue in Grand Forks Wednesday afternoon.

The incident investigation is now being handled by the Independent Investigations Office.

RCMP said shortly before 3:30 p.m., May 10, 2018, Grand Forks RCMP officers were dispatched to a report of a car being driven erratically.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly attempted to evade police by ramming into several police vehicles.

“In the course of the interaction with the driver, shots were fired by police,” said RCMP Sgt. Janelle Shoihet District Advisory NCO (Media Relations) for the Lower Mainland District.

“The male driver suffered unknown injuries. He was transported to hospital in critical condition. There is no update on his condition at this time.”

Witnesses say the man was transported via air ambulance under police guard.

Shoihet said no police officer or any member of the public was injured.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) has been notified and is deploying to the scene.

Shoihet said the RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit has been called to assist in securing the scene in anticipation of the arrival of the IIO BC.

“IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation into the police-involved shooting to see if there is any link between police actions and the man’s injuries,” she said.

“As Grand Forks is currently under a flood alert, RCMP officers from throughout the province are already situated in the area to assist, these officers will be able support the Grand Forks RCMP to ensure that day-to-day policing duties are not impacted by this IIO BC event.”

Shoihet said as the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the IIO BC at 1-855-446-8477.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation and verification by the IIO BC.
