What may seem to some like a harmless prank is actually anything but, according to Trail RCMP top cop Sgt. Mike Wicentowich, who said several motorists have complained about someone shining a green laser pointer into their eyes from outside the vehicle.

On March 1, Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment responded to a call of someone shining a green laser pointer at the driver of a vehicle who was travelling on Columbia Avenue near Main Street in Trail,” Wicentowich said. “The laser light is believed to (have been) coming from somewhere on Topping or Daniel Street. The RCMP has received reports of this suspect shining a green laser pointer onto other motorists and members of the public.”

He said even a member of the detachment experienced this, albeit in a different part of town.

“The RCMP is requesting assistance with identifying this person,” he said, adding it is dangerous to use a laser pointer in this manner. “Lasers can cause irreparable damage the eye if shined into it. The person responsible may face criminal consequences if they cause such harm or motor vehicle accident due to this irresponsible use. Laser pointers are regulated by the Government of Canada and are subject to strict rules of use.

“I think a bunch of people are getting hit by whomever this is, and we’ll eventually track this person(s) down.”

He asked residents to contact the Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment at (250) 364-2566 (or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1(800)-222-8477 if you wish to remain anonymous), if you have information about this incident.
