A Trail man is facing a list of charges after an altercation with police Saturday, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“On Nov. 16, at 10:15 a.m., frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officers responded to a 28-year-old Trail man causing a disturbance at a residence in the 1900 block of Seventh Avenue in Trail,” Wicentowich said.

“Officers attended and located the man at the residence, and discovered he had outstanding unendorsed warrants for his arrest,” he said. “When an officer attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly swung his fist at the officer. The officer managed to dodge the punch and deploy a conduct energy weapon. The officer’s deployment was unsuccessful and the man fled the scene.

“The officers conducted extensive patrols to locate the man and were assisted by RCMP Police Dog Services. The officers located the man in the 1000 block of Victoria Street and arrested him without further incident.”

He said the officers took the man into custody and lodged him in the cellblock at the Trail Detachment. He will remain in custody after appearing before a Judge in a bail hearing.

Matthew Leavitt, age 28, has been charged with:

  • Assault police officer contrary to Section 270(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Resist police officer contrary to Section 129(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Uttering threats contrary to Section 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code

We appreciate the support of our new Police Dog Service handler, and look forward to continue to keep our communities safe with his assistance, Wicentowich said.
