Residents from across the Beaver Valley, Rossland, Trail, Genelle and beyond are invited to come along, bring the family, and take simple steps toward wildfire preparedness at the upcoming “Get FireSmart” community event on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Montrose Community Park.

The free event, hosted by the RDKB FireSmart team, is designed to make wildfire preparedness approachable, practical-and fun-for all ages.

From live FireSmart demonstrations and expert Q&A sessions to a Kids Zone featuring Ember, attendees will have the opportunity to learn how small changes around the home can make a big difference ahead of wildfire season. Visitors can also explore Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue (KBRFR) trucks and equipment up close, enjoy a complimentary BBQ lunch, and connect with local partners including Nipkow’s Greenhouse and Canadian Tire for landscaping tips that support FireSmart principles.

“This event is about providing wildfire awareness and engaging community members to understand the positive impact FireSmart can have against the effects of wildfire,” said Robbie McClary, Wildfire Mitigation Specialist with the RDKB. “Events like this can provide you with the knowledge you need to prepare yourself, your home and your community.”

RDKB’s Regional FireSmart Coordinator Carlene Pires emphasized that preparedness is a shared responsibility across the community.

“Wildfire preparedness starts at home, but it doesn’t stop there,” said Pires. “When individuals take action on their properties, it contributes to the safety and resilience of the entire community. Our goal is to make FireSmart accessible, engaging, and empowering—so residents feel confident and ready for the fire season ahead.”

The “Get FireSmart” event is part of RDKB’s ongoing efforts to support residents in becoming more resilient through education, resources, and hands-on opportunities to learn.

“Small steps today can make a big difference tomorrow,” added McClary. “We’re looking forward to connecting with the community and helping make FireSmart something everyone feels they can be part of.”

Residents with questions ahead of the event are encouraged to reach out to Robbie McClary at wmslead@rdkb.com or 236-968-3873.
