Kootenay Lake Agricultural Fall Fair turns 100

The Kootenay Lake Agricultural Fall Fair’s 100th birthday is being celebrated with a Century Farm Award.
Crawford Bay’s first agricultural fair was held Sept. 26, 1911 and was a great success.
On Saturday the annual event entertains families and visitors and connects them to Kootenay area farmers with agricultural exhibitions including fruit and vegetables, baking, wine making, preserves, and floral arrangements.
“Congratulations to the Kootenay Lake Agricultural Fall Fair and everyone in Crawford Bay for reaching 100 years,” Minister of Agriculture Don McRae. ‘Fairs and exhibitions like yours are an invaluable resource for promoting B.C. agriculture, bringing families and communities together and educating fairgoers on the importance of farming and local food production.”
Kootenay families also enjoy community activities and competitions that are both challenging and fun.
This year’s fair was held at the Crawford Bay Hall on Sept. 10.
Century Farm Awards honour pioneers whose farms and ranches have been in families for 100 years or more, as well as agricultural organizations that have been active for a century or longer.
Each Century Farm Award celebrates the rich heritage of farming and ranching families and organizations in British Columbia.

99 farms or organizations have received the Century Farm Award.
48 agricultural fairs are held in urban and rural communities across B.C. year-round.
A Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions study released in 2009 showed the combined economic impact of Canada’s fairs and exhibitions is over $1 billion.
