Police applaud life-saving river rescue by Robson residents

Police are saying the ”heroic” efforts of local Good Samaritans are the reason a 62-year-old Castlegar woman is alive today, after a dramatic car crash and river rescue in Robson last Sunday.
“On Sept. 25, at (about) 10:30 a.m., Castlegar RCMP responded to a single vehicle roll-over on Broadwater Road at Horcoff Road in Robson,” said Cpl. Dan Pollock. “The investigation revealed that the driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was headed west bound on Broadwater Road and drifted off the road. The truck went down the embankment and into the Columbia River. The vehicle rested on its roof, partially submerged in the river.” He said witnesses who saw the accident ran down the embankment and waded into the river, where the driver was trapped with her head submerged under water. “The witnesses were able to use a knife to free the woman from her seat belt and rescue her from the vehicle,” he said. “She was immediately taken to the surface where she was able to cough out water and breathe on her own. She was (then) taken by ambulance to the Castlegar Hospital but suffered only minor injuries.” He said police believe the driver was distracted by using her satellite radio, causing her to drift off the road, and she was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention. “The RCMP would like to thank those involved in the driver’s rescue for their heroics which, no doubt, saved the woman’s life,” he concluded.
