School is in for Energy Rebates 101 in Nelson this Wednesday.

Energy Rebates 101 is a new program expected to help people upgrade their home’s energy efficiency and access up to $12,000 in government rebates — and it takes place Oct. 12 at the Prestige Inn (7 p.m.).

At the Energy Rebates 101 information sessions — also hosted in Castlegar and Trail by FortisBC PowerSense — homeowners will be given clear information about choosing home renovations that deliver better energy efficiency, increase a home’s comfort and help manage energy costs.

The Government of Canada ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes Program, scheduled to end in March 2012, provides rebates of up to $5,000 to homeowners who upgrade their home’s energy efficiency under the direction of a certified energy auditor.

The LiveSmart  BC program, offered jointly by FortisBC, the BC government and other BC utilities, also provides up to $7,000 in additional rebates for a total of $12,000.

Upgrades can include enhancements to heating and cooling systems, replacing windows and doors, improving insulation and draft proofing, and achieving an EnerGuide 80 rating or higher. Local tradespeople will also be in attendance to answer questions.
