Kootenay-Boundary girls can learn how it feels to fly in aviation, mix up a mirror from scratch in chemistry, build a digital map of our natural environment, and mingle with young women already working in their dream jobs at Quantum Leaps, a unique, hands-on science and technology careers event at Selkirk College Oct. 20 (4-9 p.m).   Every two years, the Kootenay Association for Science & Technology (KAST) and Selkirk College host this inspirational, interactive science and technology careers event, which aims to inspire participating young women to explore and understand the many unique opportunities available as they start to make important post-secondary and career choices.   Quantum Leaps 2011 is presented by Teck and the Columbia Basin Trust, and features:

  • keynote speech by Amber Hayes, rumoured to be perhaps the most connected woman in the Kootenays
  • Q& A and panel discussions with young women already working in the digital arts, engineering and the environment, chemistry, metals, biology, health and community development sectors, right here in our region.
  • Interactive tour of the aviation department, including a spin in the flight simulator
  • Learning to make a mirror from scratch in the chemistry lab
  • Building a digital map of the natural environment using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software
  • Free dinner, great info about Selkirk College programs, and even a free T-shirt.
