Tough road trip to Winfield for Nelson Leafs Midget Reps
The Nelson Leafs Midget Reps took it on the chin during a Minor Hockey Tournament this past weekend in Winfield.
The Midget Leafs finished winless in four starts against competition from northern B.C. and Okanagan.
Castlegar Reps started the Leafs off on the wrong foot by doubling Nelson 4-2.
Castlegar held period leads of 2-1 and 3-1.
Trevor Rigby, Geordan Broeckx, Kurtis Pihl and Grant Matthews scored for the winners. Michael Viala and Coleton Dawson replied for Nelson.
Host Winfield then pounded the Reps 5-0 before Nelson lost a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Merritt.
Tyler Podgorenko, back with the Reps after a successful stint with the Kootenay Ice of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League, and Dawson scored for Nelson.
Nelson then finished off on a downer after dropping a 6-0 loss to Williams Lake.
The Reps have little time to rest their wounds as Nelson host a seven-team Midget Rep tournament beginning Friday at the NDCC Arena.
The Reps open Friday at 6:15 p.m. against Spokane. Saturday Nelson meets Cranbrook (6:30 a.m.) before concluding the day with games at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Other teams in the tournament include Grand Forks, South Okanagan of Oliver, Kelowna and Castlegar.
Sunday the playoffs begin with the final set for 12:45 p.m. at the NDCC Arena.
