Ice squander lead, settle for 6-6 tie against Fraser Valley Bruins in BCMMHL action Sunday in Castlegar
Penalties in the final minutes of the game allowed Fraser Valley Bruins to score twice on the power play and pull out a 6-6 tie against Kootenay Ice in B.C. Major Midget Hockey League play Sunday at the Castlegar and District Community Complex.
Kootenay looked to be in control leading 6-4 with two minutes remaining in the game.
However, consecutive trips to the penalty box allowed Jake Virtanen and Mitch Skapski, with his second of the game, to pull the Bruins even.
Fraser Valley, winning game one of the two-game set 8-1 Saturday, held period leads Sunday of 3-2 and 4-3.
Kootenay pulled even in the third on a goal by Greyson Reitmeier of Nakusp before Joel Wells of Creston and Castlegar’s Darren Medeiros, with his second of the game, scored giving the Ice the two-goal advantage.
Brandon Sookro of Nelson on the power play as Kootenay scored twice with the man advantage and Justin Post of Nelson also scored for Kootenay.
Kimberley Newell of Nelson earned the tie in goal for Kootenay.
Saturday, Fraser Valley took a 3-1 advantage into the first period intermission and never looked back.
Landyn Hickmott led the Bruins with a pair of markers.
Seth Schmidt scored the lone goal for the Ice.
Brett Soles of Cranbrook took the loss in goal for Kootenay.
The tie improves the record of Kootenay to 1-13-2.
The Ice travels to Langley to meet the Valley West Hawks in the first of a two-game weekend series Saturday.
Next home action for Kootenay is December 3 in Castlegar against the Greater Vancouver Canadians. Game time is 4 p.m.
