Winter has officially hit in Nelson, again.

Another dump of snow — up to 15 centimetres — is expected overnight in Nelson and across the West Kootenay region Thursday night and into Friday morning as winter begins its assault on the climes of the Kootenays.

On Wednesday night snowfall accumulation of around 15 centimetres descended on the region through to Thursday morning for the West Kootenay region, including Nelson.

A low pressure system crossed the West Kootenay Wednesday night bringing significant snow to sections of the British Columbia interior, and it has liked the area so much it decided to stay.

The snow will taper off Friday morning as the low weakens.

As a result, driving conditions in Nelson are still very poor. On Thursday Nelson Police Department Sgt. Paul Burkart said there have been a number of accidents reported in different locations in the city.

“We’re asking drivers to stay off city streets,” he said in a release.

Sanding trucks are out but may have difficulty keeping up to the heavy snow that is being forecast for the evening and into Friday.
