CPR Holiday Train visit raises cash and food donations for Heritage City

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train was back in the Heritage City Monday night to fill local food banks with money and raise awareness to fight hunger.
Hundreds of Nelsonites flocked to Lakeside Park to hear Valdy give a live performance and donate food and money to the Salvation Army and Nelson Food Cupboard.
The last time the CPR Holiday Train made its way through Nelson was in 2009.
Since the program’s inception back in 1999, more than $5.6 million and over 2.45 million pounds of food has been collected in Canada and the United States.
At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage and a corporate contribution to the local food bank.
All the money raised, $3000, stays in the community.
This year Valdy, a Canadian folk musician whose solo career began in the early 1970s, wowed the crowd with a wide range of folk music and carols.
The CPR Holiday Train also had stops in Creston and Castlegar earlier in the day. The Holiday Train continues its cross Canada tour Tuesday in Radium and Golden.
The schedule concludes Saturday in Port Moody.
