Birds of a feather flocked together and led to a sophisticated marijuana grow operation bust Dec. 10 near Salmo.

An RCMP officer who was working traffic duty on a section of Highway 6 Dec. 9 near a property that was a former sawmill smelled something unusual in the air while on duty.

The distinct odour of growing marijuana was carried on the wind from the mill property, a spot that had been used to cultivate pot in the past.

The officer obtained a search warrant, and found about 450 plants in the grow operation.

In June of 2009 the same property was searched after an ECMP officer noticed large macaws and parrots flying near the highway. The officer followed one of the birds and stumbled upon the grow-op on the property.

Two men in their 30s found on the property were arrested in connection with the latest seizure. Police are still searching for a third man.

Police are recommending drug-related charges against the two men.
