Investigation has not yet revealed the cause of a fire in the old Sandpiper Hotel Sunday afternoon.

Castlegar fire cheif Gerry Rempel said people were at home in one of the rental units when they saw smoke and called 911.

“They got out of there and called us,” he said. “When we arrived, there was a lot of smoke, but the fire didn’t spread to other units. We were able to successfully contain it very quickly.

“The one unit was pretty much completely gutted, though.”

He said no civilians or firefighters were injured as a result of the fire, but estimates roughly $50,000 worth of property damage.

The investigation continues.
