Looking at the standings, and some of the game scores, the Kootenay Ice should have been an easy meal for the Greater Vancouver Canadians.

But the Kootenay Ice players do not look at the standings, and are possessed with very short memories.

Jake Lucchini of Trail had a five-point weekend sparking the Ice to a win and tie against the Lower Mainland power during B.C. Major Midget Hockey League action at Planet Ice in Coquitlam.

The Ice opened with a 3-2 victory over the fourth-place Canadians before skating to a 3-3 tie Sunday in game two.

Lucchini was all business Saturday during the opener, scoring twice to lead Kootenay. Castlegar’s Darren Medeiros, with an assist to

Lucchini and Trail’s Mitch Foyle, notched the winner with time running out.

Sunday, Foyle scored with six minutes remaining to pull the Ice even.

Medeiros and Quinn Klimchuk of Castlegar also scored for the Ice.

Brett Soles of Cranbrook and former Lower Mainland product Kimberley Newell were outstanding between the pipes for Kootenay.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Kootenay as the Ice travel to Prince George Saturday for a two-game set against the second-place Cariboo Cougars.

Next home game in the Kootenays is January 28-29 when the Ice host South Island Thunderbirds at the NDCC Arena.
