POLICE BEAT: Robber stopped in his tracks

Grand Forks RCMP caught a robber red handed after a citizen called them out for a robbery in progress at the Overwaitea in Grand Forks.
The call came in on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 10:48 p.m.. When the police got there the 51 year-old man from Grand Forks was inside the Overwaitea compound at the back of the store. Police apprehended the suspect and charged him with break and enter.
“The individual is well-known to police,” said Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sergeant Jim Harrison.
Stage prop stolen from high school
A 17th Century pistol stage prop has been stolen from the Grand Forks Secondary School Theatre Department.
The pistol was one of several props reported stolen from the school on Monday, Feb. 6 at 2:40 p.m. A school-wide announcement of the missing items was made and all but the pistol was returned, said Harrison.
The pistol has a curved wooden handle and is about eight inches long.
“If anyone spots the pistol I’m sure the high school would love to have it back,” said Harrison, adding he believes the theft to be an inside job.
Driver faces up to week in jail
A 29 year-old male Grand Forks resident is facing up to seven days in jail after he was found driving with a suspended license.
At a routine roadside checkstop on Tuesday Feb. 7 at 2:50 p.m. on the corner of 72nd Street and 7th Street, Grand Forks RCMP charged the man with driving while under suspension under the Motor Vehicles Act.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to an automatic seven days in jail.
Light fingered hitchhiker
A man from Slocan B.C. is a wallet down after doing a good deed for a hitchhiker.
The man was driving through Grand Forks when he picked up a woman hitchhiker on Friday, Feb. 10. She asked to be dropped off near Greenwood, which he did. It wasn’t until after dropping her off that the driver discovered his wallet was missing, which included his debit card.
Police have a suspect and are still working on the case, said Harrison.
Stolen car found
A stolen two-door black Honda Civic from Kelowna has been recovered by Grand Forks RCMP.
On Saturday, Feb. 11 at 5:15 p.m. police saw the vehicle parked on 2nd Street, near Central Avenue. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which appears on the dashboard under the windshield, had been tampered with. Upon further investigation, they discovered the vehicle had been stolen from Kelowna.
The suspect, a 43 year-old man from Grand Forks, has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and tampering with a VIN number.
