Hawks beat up on Chiefs 7-1 to grab two game lead in KIJHL Final
The Beaver Valley Nitehawks realized game one of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Final was not one of the team’s best of the playoffs.
Game two the Hawks turned it up a few notches.
Beaver Valley exploded for five goals in the first two periods to blast the Kelowna Chiefs 7-1 Thursday in Fruitvale to grab a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven KIJHL Championship.
Games three and four go Saturday and Sunday in Rutland.
After Tre Mason opened the scoring for the Chiefs it was all Hawks.
Tyler Collins, with his second goal in as many games, Dallas Calvin, on the power play, and Nick Perez erased the early deficit and allow the Kootenay Conference champs to lead 3-1 after 20 minutes.
Beaver Valley kept up the pressure on the Chiefs in the second frame, scoring two more times before Calvin complete his hat-trick with a pair in the third.
Calvin, a product of Trail, finished the game with five points and was named the first star.
Kootenay Ice Major Midget captain Jake Lucchini and Perez also scored for Beaver Valley.
The Hawks chased Kelowna starter Tyler O’Donnell from the nets after one period. Back up Connor Wilkinson finished the game for the Chiefs.
Beaver Valley out shot the Chiefs 33-25.
SERIES NOTES: Tyler Collins finished the game with three points while Jake Lucchini, Nick Perez, Craig Martin and Max Flanagan each added a pair of points. . . .Lucchini was named second star while Beaver Valley starting goalie Zach Perehudoff picked up the third selection. . . . Top point getters for Kelowna, Dane Rupert and Landon Andrusiak were help scoreless in game two. . . . Beaver Valley has outscored the Chiefs 11-3 in the series. . . .This is only the second time in the 2012 post season the Chiefs have trailed in a series. During the opening round against Osoyoss Coyotes, Kelowna trailed 2-1.
