The West Kootenay Integrated Road Safety Unit and Nelson RCMP were happy with the results following a road safety check at the foot of Whitewater Ski Hill Road and Highway 6 Sunday afternoon.

The road check, held from noon to 6 p.m., was in direct response to the Beach Party Weekend at Whitewater Ski Resort.

“In all, the police officer’s were very impressed to see a large number of sober driver’s driving their friends home and would like to commend the positive feedback from the motoring public received at the check,” said Cst Dan Markevich of the West Kootenay IRSU.

Officers were making enhanced patrols in the area in order to reduce impaired driving, Liquor Act and Motor Vehicle Act infractions, and prevent collisions.

During the road check police issued 19 violation tickets involving driver’s licence and vehicle insurance infractions and seven vehicle defect notices.

One driver received a 24-hour driving prohibition due to operating a motor vehicle with drugs in his body while another person was charged with possession of drugs.

A small amount of drugs were seized from another individual, who was not charged.

The public should be aware driving impaired driving can result in a criminal charge, and/ or a driving prohibition with vehicle impoundment between three and 30 days.

Monday marked the final day of operation for Whitewater Ski Resort.

Skiing during the final month was nothing short of amazing as the hill received no less than 427 cm of new snow since March 1.
