Flaggers are on site and traffic is slow as highway crews map out a strategy to fix the washout of road at the junction of Highway 3B in Meadows west of Salmo.

Wednesday afternoon, a motorist noticed the road had washed out on east end of the Bombi Summit Road.

A culvert became blocked and water from the spring runoff washed out one lane of the highway.

The Drive BC website reports the road is reduced to single lane alternating traffic for the next 24 hours.

Thursday saw a significant amount of rain, raising creeks in the region.

The weather report has the region drying out for a few days before rain returns for the better part of next week.

Rainfall warning issued for Kootenays’ mudslide, washout cause major delays on West Kootenay roads

The crazy weather is beginning to affect driving in the West Kootenay. And the weather isn’t going to get any better before it gets worse as Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the Kootenay region with 25 to 40 mm of rain is expected today and tonight.

Environment Canada reports that a frontal system will slowly move across British Columbia interior spreading significant rain over portions of the interior today and tonight.

An additional 15 to 25 mm of rain is expected over the Southern Okanagan today.

Regions in the Kootenays will see 25 to 40 mm of rain today and tonight. The rain is forecast to ease tonight as the front continues eastwards and enters Alberta.

The weather is being blamed for no less than two major delays Wednesday on Highway 6 south of Nelson and Highway 3 east of Fruitvale.

Drivers of B.C.’s southern interior route between Salmo and Fruitvale were slowed to a crawl Wednesday afternoon eight kilometers west of the Junction of Highway 3B in Meadows when the road collapsed.

The highway is now reduced to single lane alternating traffic.

Crews are on the scene assessing the damage.

Early Wednesday morning a mud slide four kilometers south of the Whitewater Ski Hill turnoff caused delays during the morning.

The slide covered half of the highway but tree stuck out over the other part of the road causing major delays.

Highway crews had the road opened to single lane alternatiing traffic which allowed morning traffic to move smoothly.

The recent thunderstorms along with heavy snow is being blamed for the mud slide.

Drivers are also advised to watch for rocks on road from the Paulson Bridge west of Castlegar to Meadows.
