The news just got a lot more interesting for a North Shore couple.

While watching the 5 o’clock  segment the couple noticed smoke and fire coming from the house at 2184 Highway 3A at approximately 5:20 p.m. Monday.

“All I noticed was the . . . news was on when we saw the fire start and called it in,” the neighbours told The Nelson Daily Monday.

“I saw black smoke coming from the house,” the couple added.

Firefighters from North Shore, Balfour and Nelson departments responded to the call approximately four miles from Nelson on the beach side of the highway but were unable to save the structure as problems keeping enough water on the blaze allowed the fire to flame-up continuously.

Although firefighters managed to keep the fire away from surrounding trees and brush and away from the homes of any adjacent neighours.

Owners of the house are from Trail that was originally a beach house.

The owners built a two-story structure onto the original house.

It was in the kitchen of the older part of the house is where the fire is believed to have started.

The flames quickly gutted that original structure before spreading to the two-story part of the house.

No one is believed to be at home at the time of the fire.

Neighbours are not sure if anyone was living in the house at the time of the fire, however, there was a car in the driveway.

Surprisingly, young boaters cruising along on Kootenay Lake saw the fire. The boaters raced to shore before running up the lawn and circling the house to see if anyone was home.

The boaters managed to push a compact import car out of the driveway, along with a snow blower, to safety.

RCMP and B.C. Ambulance also attended the scene.

Smoke from the fire flowed all the way to Nelson.

The fire is the second in less than a week for the North Shore Fire Department.

Thursday, at Nine Mile, the department responded to a house that fire firefighters managed to contain to the roof.
