Quick reponse by a thoughtful neighbour may have saved a North Shore family from possibly life-threatening injury following a roof fire Thursday (May 10) at 4230 Highway 3A nine miles north of Nelson.

At approximately 4:50 p.m., North Shore Fire Department received a call of a fire on Crescent Bay Road after a neighbour noticed the roof of the house at 4230 Highway 3A was on fire.

“A neighbour next door noticed the roof of the house was on fire and came and banged on the door to tell the owners,” North Shore assistant Fire Chief Fred Schneider told The Nelson Daily.

Upon arrival, North Shore firefighters saw the skake roof of the house engulfed in flames. The firefighters, with the assistances of members from the Balfour Fire Department, quickly poured water on the structure using two trucks.

“It was lucky we got there when we did,” Schneider explained.

“It took us 10 minutes to get a handle on the fire. . .. All the guys did a good job working hard to get the fire under control.”

Schneider said damage was contained to the roof of the house. The main floor of the house received water damage.

A total of nine firefighters from both North Shore and Balfour departments attended the fire along with members from B.C. Ambulance.

However, there were no injuries reported at the scene.

Insurance adjusters are now investigating the cause of the fire which at this time does not appear to be suspicious.
