RDCK shuts down parts of Nelson/Creston Great Northern Trail

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued a warning to the public using the Nelson/Salmo Great Northern Trail there has been recent grizzly bear sightings in the area.
In a written news release Friday, RDCK said, “A very large mother grizzly and three large cubs continue to be in the area and have been seen as recently as June 12th.”
As a result the RDCK is closing the Cottonwood Lake to Hall Siding portion of the trail, formerly the Burling Northern Santa Fe right of way, until further notice.
“The closure is required to prevent encounters with bears,” the release went on to say.
“Black bear and grizzly bear activity is common in the Spring and early Summer.
“Please do not attempt to view or approach the bears. Bears that approach people, or are approached by people, may be destroyed as a result of a dangerous encounter.”
The RDCK has also closed the Ravine Trestle (Shesnuk Creek) area approximately 2.5 kilometres south of the Stanley Street loop entrance in Nelson due to a mudslide that occurred earlier this Spring.
The trail is open from Stanley Street to Cottonwood Lake but is impassable in the Ravine Trestle area until the site is remediated.
Also in the Ymir area a portion of the trail will be closed from Wednesday to Friday (June 20-22) for crews to complete an environmental investigation.
There will be intermittent disturbance on the trail between these dates between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The RDCK hopes the public will respect all closures.
