First hot weekend of summer keeps Nelson Police busy as officers respond to more than 40 calls

The first sunny weekend of summer definitely was a busy one for Nelson Police Department as officers dealt from calls ranging from disturbances, noise complaints, damage to vehicles and fights.
“Forty-four calls for service came in for Friday and Saturday night alone,” said Sergeant Janet Scott-Pryke in an emailed press release.
Pranksters came close to spoiling the summer for Nelson children after a cement park bench support section was tossed over a six-foot chain-link fence near Gyro Park Pool Saturday.
The resulting impact sent shattered pieces of cement into the swimming pool.
City Park staff was called to clean up the debris in the pool.
However, there was no damage to the pool’s seal coating.
NPD officers received a number of calls regarding overnight mischief near Gyro Park and have increased patrols.
Saturday night was ‘fight night’ in Nelson
Nelson Police officers responded to no less than three separate incidents of fighting in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The first bout happened at Finlay’s Bar and Grill.
Police were called at 2 a.m. to deal with a large group of intoxicated males causing problems starting fights outside the drinking establishment.
During the altercation police arrested a 24-year-old male on two outstanding warrants with charges ranging from Assault to Possession of a Prohibited Weapon.
The male was later released on a Promise to Appear with a court date set for July 24th in Nelson.
Less than 90 minutes later, at 3:20 a.m., Nelson police responded to another call of fighting in the 400 block of Josephine Street.
Upon arrival officers located a 29-year-old male suffering from facial injuries.
The man refused medical attention before being escorted home due to his level on intoxication.
The incident remains under investigation.
Round three of fight night had police responding to a disturbance call in the lower Fairview area.
When officers arrived they determined four males had been fighting, smashing a car windshield in the process.
Alcohol was a factor and further investigation revealed the fight as consensual as the males were best friends.
All agreed to pay for the damages for the windshield.
No charges are contemplated at this time.
Man hurt after falling off park bench
Late Friday night, police, along with Nelson Fire Rescue and Emergency Health Services (EHS), were called to the 400 block of Baker Street on the report a man was passed out on the street.
The caller reported the male had injuries indicative of a possible assault.
Upon arrival officers determined the 27-year-old male had suffered his injuries falling off the park bench due to his level of intoxication.
The man was cleared by EHS paramedics and transported to NPD cells to sober up.
During time in police lockup, officers determined the male was on conditions not to consume alcohol from previous charges.
The man was charged with breaching his conditions and released on a Promise to Appear with a court date set for September 11th in Nelson and was released from custody when sober.
Domestic dispute Friday in Uphill
Nelson Police were called to a domestic dispute in progress in the Uphill area at 8 p.m. Friday.
When officers arrived they found the suspect, a 48-year-old male, had left the residence.
The man was located a short time later by police and charged with Assault and remanded in custody,
He appeared in Nelson court Monday (July 9).
