JobFest make stop in Nelson Thursday

The provincial government’s JobFest made one of its 50 stops Thursday in Nelson to educate young B.C. residents in the ever-changing job market.
The idea is to celebrate the many career opportunities available in the province for young people between the ages of 14 to 25 and to deliver information about the labour market while at the same time exploring key job-finding tools developed by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation.
“The intention that this is not a job fair like some people think, it’s more of a research and development,” JobFest tour manager Daisy Blue Groff told The Nelson Daily Thursday.
“The provincial government decided to present a job display I feel that’s very progressive.”
JobFest, which also had a stop earlier this week in Castlegar, kicked off at 2 p.m. The event showcased local musical talent Roy Has Fire and ChinLock along with featuring keynote speakers Christine Schmidt and Michelle D’Entremont.
The event also featured performances by Acres of Lions.
Blue Groff, who is no stranger to Nelson having been to the Heritage City on tour with her band, Painting Daisies, said between 300-400 young workers attended the event.
“I think it was a success,” Blue Groff said. “A lot of people attended and walked away with DVD’s and information on how to find that next job.”
Blue Groff said the tour has 16 stops remaining in the Kootenays, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
