Kootenay Ice snap losing streak with series sweep of Blazers
Time to break up the Kootenay Ice.
After going winless in eight games to start the season, the Ice racked up two straight wins — 3-2 and 6-5 — over the Thompson Blazers in B.C. Hockey Major Midget League play at the Cominco Arena in Trail.
In game one,
The Ice took an early lead late in the first period as Kyle Hope of Trail scored the first goal on the power play and Brandon Sookro from South Slocan followed up with a goal of his own minutes later.
Nelson’s Justin Post put the home team up 3-0 before the Blazer rallied to make the game close on goals by Nicholas Chyzowski and Ryan Clifford.
Game two (2) was another tight one for the two (2) teams, but it was the Ice that came out strong and took an early first period lead. Sookro opened up the scoring for the Ice just 30 seconds into the game before Nelson’s Austin Tambellini made it 2-0 on the power play.
Nolan Percival and Smith also scored in the opening frame to give Kootenay a 4-1 lead.
Percival, with his second of the game, made the score 5-3 after 40 minutes.
The Blazers once again outscored the Ice in the third 2-1 but a goal by Post in the final minute was enough to give Kootenay the series sweep.
Sookro finished the game with five points to lead the Ice.
Adam Maida was in goal for both games in goal.
The Ice remains at home for a two-game weekend series against South Island Royals.
Saturday’s game is at 4 p.m. with Sunday’s contest set for 9:45 a.m. Both games are at the Cominco Arena.
