Shypitka, Nichol roar out of starting gates at Seniors Championships
The two Kootenay rinks are making life tough on the visiting rinks at the Tim Horton’s BC Senior Men’s Curling Championships Tuesday in Trail.
The Myron Nichol rink out of Castlegar and Cranbrook’s Tom Shypitka are 2-0 after two draws.
Nichol, third Rick Brown, second Terry Kryzcka and lead Rob Babiarz, bounced Rick Pughe of New Westminster 7-4 while Shypitka edged Mel Steffin of the Royal City Curling Club 7-6 in nine ends.
Shypitka, third Fred Thomson of Nelson, second Don Freschi of Trail and Bill King of Fruitvale, led 5-1 before Steffin roared back.
The two Kootenay rinks, tied for top spot in the standings, meet Wednesday in Draw three action.
On the women’s side of the championships, Kathy Smiley of New West defeated Kootenay rep Teresa Hiram rink of Grand Forks12-5.
Hiram, third Rhonda Lee Bedard, second Rose Beauchamp and lead indy Pettapiece are winless in two starts.

The Myron Nichol rink of Castlegar, including third Rick Brown, second Terry Kryzcka and lead Rob Babiarz, outlasted Wes Craig of Victoria 6-4.
Meanwhile Cranbrook’s Tom Shypitka dumped Craig Lepine of Langley. The final score was unavailable but Shypitka led 7-3 after seven ends.
Team Shypitka includes third Fred Thomson of Nelson, second Don Freschi of Trail and Bill King of Fruitvale.
Mel Steffin of the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster defeated Ken Teskey of Williams Lake10-3 while Rick Pughe of New Westminster blasted Garry Gelowitz of Kelowna 7-2 in nine ends.
Opening ceremonies precede Draw two at 7 p.m. when Shypitka meets Steffin and Nichol plays Pughe.
Debbie Jones-Walker of Nanaimo outlasted the Teresa Hiram rink of Grand Forks 7-5 in the first draw of the women’s championships in Trail.
Jones-Walker scored twice in the final two ends to secure the win.
The two bonspiels continues through the week with the final set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
