Saints look to post back-to-back wins as UVIC Vikes come to Castlegar
The Selkirk College Men’s Hockey program will look to record back-to-back victories on home ice to open the 2013/14 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League regular season this Friday when the University of Victoria visits for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff at the Castlegar Recreation Complex.
The Saints are coming off a 7-2 victory over Eastern Washington in their home opener that their power-play explode for five goals on seven opportunities. But Selkirk will look to get more production at even strength this weekend against an opponent they eliminated from the league playoffs in March.
“Every year that I’ve been a part of this league, UVic has a team that is hard working and tough to play against,” says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois.
“They’re coming off a tough opening weekend against Thompson Rivers and they’ve had a couple weeks now to make some adjustments and get better, so I’m expecting the same type of tight game that we usually see when they come to town.”
The Vikes dropped both ends of a season-opening doubleheader with the WolfPack at home losing 6-1 and 6-5. The team is led offensively by former BCHLer Shawn Mueller, who led all BCIHL goal scorers last season with 22 and finished tied for second in points with Saints captain Logan Proulx.
For Selkirk, assistant captain Connor McLaughlin and winger Cody Fidgett will look to continue their hot offensive starts to the season. Both forwards picked up hat tricks in the opener, while McLaughlin also chipped in an assist. Beau Taylor scored the Saints’ other goal.
Tickets for Friday’s game will be available at the door for $8 (Adults) and $5 (Selkirk students & staff, seniors, children 6 & older).
