Ice, Cougars split weekend series in Nelson

If the Kootenay Ice had a point for every game the club let slip away, well, the Ice would be probably battling for a playoff spot instead of fighting to stay out of the BC Major Midget Hockey League cellar.
Cariboo Cougars scored three power play goals en route to a 4-2 victory Sunday over the Ice at the Civic Centre in Nelson.
The Ice had a great chance to sweep the series after rallying to score four unanswered goals Saturday to edge the Cougars 4-1 at the NDCC Arena.
The weekend split keeps the Ice in last place in the standings with a 5-22-5 record.
Kootenay opened the weekend surrendering the first goal as Greg Dakus buried a rebound Ice netminder Jason Mailhiot was unable to corral.
The scored held up until Kootenay exploded for four third-period goals in the final nine minutes of the game.
Kadrian Klimchuk of Castlegar tied the game before Coy Prevost of Kimberley put the Ice in the lead for good.
Ryan Neil of Fruitvale and Klimchuk completed the scoring, with Klimchuk scoring into an empty net.
Sunday, Bryan Allbee scored his second goal of the game minutes into the second period to power the Cougars to the win.
Allbee and Chase Dubois scored first period goals for Cariboo as the visitors led 2-1.
The teams exchanged second period goals before Isaiha Berra added some insurance in the third.
Logan Wullum of Creston and Jacob Yuris of Trail replied for Kootenay.
Kootenay travels to Langley this weekend to face the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds in a pair of games.
