Nelson homeowner gets the better of would-be thief

An intoxicated would-be thief had better re-think his career in crime after a homeowner got the better of him during an attempted break-and-enter Saturday morning in Nelson.

The call was one of 50 received during a busy weekend by Nelson Police Department Dispatch.

Nelson Police received break-and-enter call shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday (June 21) in the View Street area.

The intoxicated male had entered the unlocked residence with a family asleep inside.

The homeowner was awakened to the noise before confronting the man. He was able to subdue the thief until police arrived.

Nelson Police are now considering charges to the 23-year-old Harrop man.

Police would like to remind the public, that although Nelson is a safe place to live, to keep doors locked during the evening and family and belongings safe.

Vandals raise havoc on vehicles in Fairview, Uphill and Rosemont areas

NPD is asking for the assistance of the public following a rash of vandalism late Thursday evening and early Friday morning. 

Vandals targeted six vehicle windows in the Fairview, Uphill and Rosemont areas as well as one of the large windows at in the gym at the Nelson & District Community Complex. 

It is believed that the culprits used a pellet gun to cause this damage and due to the distances covered it is felt they were using a vehicle. 

Damage is estimated at over $5000.

Two arrested after police assaulted during Saturday morning call

Shortly after midnight on Saturday (June 21) morning, officers responded to a man down call in the 400 block of Vernon Street. 

When officers arrived they found a highly intoxicated male who became combative and attempted to flee. 

The 26-year-old Nelson man was subsequently arrested and held and charged for being Intoxicated in a Public Place. 

During the arrest a female acquaintance, in an attempt to help her friend, assaulted two of the officers causing minor injuries to one. 

The 23-year-old Nelson resident was arrested and charged with Obstructing a Police Officer and two counts of Assaulting a Police Officer.
