Nelson Police respond to early morning accident

A section of the stone wall near the Nelson Courthouse took a major hit early Saturday (June 14) morning as a suspected impaired driver lost control of his vehicle before ramming into the structure.

Nelson Police dispatch received multiple 9-1-1 calls at 1:45 a.m. of a single vehicle collision in front of the Nelson Courthouse.

Members arrived to find extensive damage to the vehicle that was still occupied by a male driver and male passenger. 

Both the driver and passenger side airbags were deployed. 

Witnesses at the scene reported observing the vehicle lose control while attempting to negotiate the corner at a high rate of speed before the vehicle  reportedly collided with a stone wall in front of the Courthouse.

The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Nelson man, was subsequently investigated for Impaired Driving and is facing several charges in relation to the accident. 

The driver also sustained minor injuries from the collision.
