A fire yesterday morning outside the old Toxco location (now home to Retriev Technologies) drew 17 firefighters from Trail, four from Warfield and one from Montrose, according to Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue chief Terry Martin.

He said the blaze was quickly controlled, and while crews continue to investigate, the fire doesn’t appear suspicious. He also said it was a clean burn, and resident concerns about burning chemicals were unfounded.

Meanwhile, Steve Robinson, operations manager at Retriev Technologies, issued the following statement:

“At approximately 6 a.m., there was small fire in the post-production storage area of our recycling facility. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Fire Services. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.

“No employees were injured during this incident and no structural damage occurred. There was no release that would adversely affect either the environment, our neighbours or our employees. As of 10:30 a.m., activities at our recycling facility had resumed operation.

“We would like to thank the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Fire Services for their prompt and professional response.

“The safety and well-being of our employees, contractors and neighbours is our top priority. Accordingly, we are committed to take whatever corrective actions are necessary to help mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future.”
