Creston resident charged with arson in Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences fire

Following a lengthy investigation, Nelson Police have now charged a 19-year-old Creston resident with arson following a suspicious fire on (Saturday) October 4, 2014 in the lower level of a Nelson Heritage Building located at 303 Vernon Street.

Police said the fire had started in the basement and storage area below the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences which occupies the upper floor of the building.

There are also two private residences above where the fire was started. 

All occupants were able to safely exit their residences and the fire was extinguished in time to save the building. Total damage was estimated to be at $25,000.
 
The Creston resident was charged on Thursday (January 22).

He was released on a Recognizance of Bail with strict conditions and is scheduled to appear in Nelson Provincial Court on February 3.
