Public Skating for the week of January 19-25, 2015

Stingrays Swim Club
For the New Year winter session, the Stingrays are offering a Trial Memberships (5 practice days with the team) for $25.00; One night per week for $125.00; Two nights per week for $200.00. Take your swimming to the next level! Check out the Stingrays on Monday and / or Tuesday nights at the Trail Aquatic Centre. Juniors Swim from 5:00-6:00pm and Seniors from 6:00-7:00pm. Monthly Movie at the Miners Hall
“The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared!”
Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Jonas Jonasson, the unlikely story of a 100-year-old man who decides it’s not too late to start over. For most people it would be the adventure of a lifetime, but Allan Karlsson’s unexpected journey is not his first. For a century he’s made the world uncertain, and now he is on the loose again. Brought to the community by the Youth Action Network and the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture, the movie is showing at the Miners Hall at 6:00pm on Sunday, January 25. Admission is by donation.
Rossland Youth Action Network
The Youth Action Network is getting going for its 2014 / 2015 season! Mike Kent has lots of great programs and opportunities to roll out this year and the excitement is just starting! CBT Scratch Editing Meeting for Youth 12 and up!
Interested in helping with editing decisions for the next issue of Columbia Basin Trust’s Scratch magazine? You get to help decide which photos and articles will end up in the magazine. Head to the Seven Summits Centre for Learning on Wednesday, February 4 from 3:30-6:00pm. YAN will provide food and refreshments!
The Rossland Makerlab is back!
Starting up again on Thursday, January 8 – drop in and get support in creating 3D Models, printing on the 3D printer and all things technology based. Every Thursday at the Seven Summits Centre for Learning, from 7:00-8:30pm for youth 12-18 yrs old.
Parkour & Freerunning
Parkour is the “Art of Movement”. Involvement in Parkour requires consistent, disciplined training with an emphasis on functional strength, physical conditioning, balance, creativity, fluidity, control, precision, spatial awareness, and looking beyond the traditional use of objects. The Parkour program is located in the RSS Auditorium from 7:00-8:30pm. Tuesdays is Pure Parkour for kids ages 8 years and up. Thursdays is Parkour and Freerunning for advanced athletes and you must be invited by an Instructor. Parkour starts up again on Tuesday, January 6!
Rossland Public Library
The Library has lots of great programs and events running in the next few days, weeks and months! On Fridays at 11:00am the Books and Babies songs and story time happens for little ones 0 to 30 months. Every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm there is something going on in the Library for school aged kids. The Page Turners program is for kids 8-11 years old, the second Thursday of each month from 3:00-4:00pm. The Board Games Club for kids 6-12 years runs the fourth Thursday of each month from 3:00-4:00pm

Recreation Programs to check out!
The Winter Brochure is available online at www.rossland.ca, then Recreation Program Guide, and in hardcopy at the Public Library and the Credit Union. There are lots of great, new programs to check out! Many of the REC Programs have a drop in option, or you can register even after the starting date. Please let us know if you’re interested in either option, for one of the programs listed.
Prenatal and Preschool Programs
· Prenatal Yoga
This class provides an opportunity to deepen your relationship with your body and baby through gentle yoga postures, breath work and meditation. Dates will be February 1-March 8, 2015 (no class on February 15, 2015) Times are Sundays, 4:00-5:00pm and fees are$75.00 The classes will be held at the Miners Hall.
· Preschool Spanish Class
Introduction to Spanish through songs, games and fun! Join us to take on the melodious and exotic tone of Spanish. Parents take part in the sessions and assist their children. Families who took the first semester class will continue to learn new words and phrases while new families will catch up quickly in this fun and engaging format. Dates and Times: January 15 – March 12, 2015, Thursdays, 10:00-10:45am.
· Preschool French Class
Capturing your children’s interest for language starts here with an introduction to French through songs, games and fun. Parents take part in the sessions and assist their children. Families who took the first semester class will continue to learn new words and phrases while new families will catch up quickly in this fun and engaging format. Dates and Times: January 14 – March 11, 2015, Wednesdays, 10:00-10:45am
· Tumbleweeds: A movement based parent / tot program for children ages Infant to 4 years – designed specifically to encourage children to explore movement through play based activities. Physical strength, flexibility, balance and coordination will be emphasized through the various activities. Each week is structured around a play-based routine including; free play, warm up songs, specialized activities, parachute games and ending with a story. Session #2: January 13-March 3, Tuesdays, 10:30-11:15am in the Miners Hall. Please register with Rossland Rec.
Children’s Programs
· Karate for kids ages 6-14 years starts up again this week! The session runs from January 6 to March 31, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm. If your child is interested in Karate and would like to try to program before committing to it, please don’t hesitate to check it out! Scott will be happy to answer all your questions!
· Drawing and Painting
This class focusses on developing drawing skills using a variety of mediums including artists pencils, charcoal, pastels and erasers (reduction drawings). The second half of the course will be spent transferring the drawing skills into painting. The class runs from January 14 to March 4 on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00pm for kids ages 7-11 years.
· Dragon Art Class
Dragons are awesome! So this class is designated to them. We will draw them, sculpt them and animate them. It’s a basic art class where all the art (including drawing, painting, sculpting and printmaking) will be based around dragons of their choice. Come out and enjoy dragons! Dates and Times: January 14– March 4, 2015, Wednesdays, 4:15-5:15pm for kids ages 7-11 years.
· Sculpture Class
This five week program has kids designing, creating and discovering soap caving, wire sculptures and found sculptures. These are smaller sculptures so that children can complete the projects in the allotted time. Classes run from February 12 to March 12 on Thursdays from 5:15-6:15pm.
· Spanish Classes for Kids!
Beginners or intermediate, everybody is welcome to learn! This class continues from the Fall Session but is open to new children who would like to learn Spanish and are motivated to learn. Continuing students will enjoy learning more advanced words and phrases. Emilie is an experienced Tutor with a European French background.
Dates and Times: January 16 – March 13, 2015, (no session February 20, 2015), Fridays, 3:00 – 4:15pm. For kids ages 6-10 years.
Youth Programs
· Co-Ed Youth Hockey: for kids ages 11-13 years on Mondays from 3:30pm-4:30pm. This is a new program for older kids who would like to play fun, non-contact hockey. Players learn skills and drills and enjoy a game of scrimmage hockey at the end of each session. Players are required to have full hockey equipment including a helmet in order to come onto the ice.
· French Tutorial Class
This class is designed for youth are currently learning French and could use additional tutoring assistance. Emilie is a trained Tutor and will oversee the completion of homework – providing assistance and support.
Dates and Times: January 12 – March 9, 2015, Mondays, 3:00 – 4:15pm. For kids ages 11-14 years.
Adult Programs
· Adult Co-Ed Recreational Hockey
Get your game on, get fit, and meet new people when you come out and play co-ed recreational hockey! This is fun, non-contact hockey and full equipment is necessary! Tuesdays Hockey (Tuesdays, 9:45-11:00pm)
is good for those with a little experience, Sunday Hockey (Sundays, 9:15-10:30pm) is good for those who are just learning the game and Thursday is fast and fun! (Thursdays, 1:45-3:15pm ($10/drop-in option only)
Goalies play for free! $80/punch pass or $10.00 to drop in!
· Yoga – Winter Wisdom Flow with Danielle Hachey, Registered Yoga Teacher
Hibernate, percolate, rejuvenate, cultivate, insulate…….A restorative Flow Practice that will focus on the inner wisdom of the winter season, while warming up the toes and keeping alignment in breath, body and mind.

· Yoga for Snow Sports (Snow + Yoga = Snoga!) with Cynthia Anonuevo, Registered Yoga Teacher
This yoga class is designed to help you build balance, strength and coordination your snow sport. The focus of this class is to use breath, movement, and relaxation techniques to condition your mind and body to enhance and compliment your snow sport experience. However you play in the snow, this class is for you! All levels of experience are welcome. · Karate for Adult & Teens with Scott Sheldo
Starting in September! The Rossland Chito-Ryu Karate Dojo is welcoming new students and any old Shotokan members to come and train with our Registered/Certified Karate Program. Chito-Ryu Karate has a thousand years of history, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) in China. Influenced by Chinese White Crane Kung-Fu and Okinawan Shuri-te and Naha-te, Chito-Ryu is one of the five original styles to come into history’s light and is one of it’s most exclusive. · Disc GolfKootenay Rockies Disc Golf Society
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players throw a flying disc at a basket and try to get their disc into a basket in the fewest number of throws. Disc golf is becoming very popular and Rossland has Thin Air, an outstanding disc golf course for summer play. For the winter, the Kootenay Rockies Disc Golf Society are offering indoor disc golf Fridays at 7:00PM to 9:00PM from January to mid-March at the RSS gym. A variety of fun putting games will be played on a short indoor course. Baskets will be provided, however if you have a practice basket bring it along. Players should bring their own discs but if you want to try disc golf and don’t have a disc there will be discs available. There are no fees.
