That suspicious fire on the North Shore Sunday afternoon was a person-caused fire said Karlie Shaughnessy of the Southeast Fire Centre.

“It was an escaped campfire,” Shaughnessy told The Nelson Daily.

“Anyone leaving a campfire unattended can be held liable for the supression costs should the fire get away,” Shaughnessy added.

The fire burned in a remote area of Elephant Mountain, approximately two to three kilometers north of the Big Orange Bridge.

Shaughnessy said the Southeast Fire Centre sent an initial attack crew to deal with the 0.2 hectare wildfire.

Crews were in the mop up stage Monday.

Shaughnessy said even with the cooler temperatures, the public should be vigilant with out door burning or campfires.
