Bhatoa, Woods lead Rebels to 9-0 whitewash of Nelson Leafs
The Nelson Leafs perhaps suffered its worst defeat in franchise history as rival Castlegar Rebels put a 9-0 beat-down on the Green and White in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action Wednesday night in the Sunflower City.
Mike Bhatoa scored four times and had six points while Tayden Woods scored the hat-trick and finished with five to lead the pasting of the Leafs, losers of two straight and nine of the last 12 games.
Chris Breese and Darren Medeiros also scored for the Rebels, which held period leads of 4-0 and 7-0.
The Rebels chased newly signed netminder Zachery Babin from the Leaf nets midway through the second period after Woods scored to make the score 6-0.
Babin was acquired before the December 1 BC Hockey roster deadline from the Princeton Posse in an exchange for future considerations.
Castlegar out shot Nelson 33-31 in the game.
Nelson, clinging to a one-point lead over Grand Forks Border Bruins in the battle for third spot in the Murdoch Division, travels to Kimberley Friday for a game against the defending KIJHL champs before returning home Saturday for a date against Columbia Valley Rockies.
Next up for Castlegar is a game Friday against Eddie Mountain Fernie Ghostriders in the East Kootenay City.
