Police are very keen to find witnesses after a brutal and apparently unprovoked assault on a Good Samaritan yesterday, according to RCMP Cpl. Darryl Orr.

“On Dec. 7 at 2:49 a.m., a local utility worker stopped his vehicle on the Warfield Hill below Webster School to provide assistance to a vehicle, which was parked on the lefthand side of the road with its emergency flashers on,” Orr explained. “When the utility worker asked the driver if he was okay, the male driver exited his vehicle and assaulted the utility worker.”

Orr said the victim, because of his position as a public servant, was reluctant to fight back or defend himself, and ended up badly beaten. He went directly to the hospital after the attack, and was released with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The suspect is described as mid 20s to 30s, clean shaven, average build wearing a green or dark hoody or fleece jacket. The utility worker fled the area after being assaulted, and police wish to identify this male suspect,” Orr said. “The suspect’s vehicle was described as a grey or dark coloured, two- door car.”

Orr said it’s possible, given the hour, that the suspect was up to no good and thought the official-looking vehicle was actually checking him out, or catching him in some nefarious activity, but it’s impossible to say for certain until they’ve located the suspect – something Orr said he is very much determined to do.

“We want to solve this one, for sure,” he said. “It becomes problematic because of the late hour and lack of witnesses, but anyone who saw anything or has any information that might lead us to the suspect is strongly urged to contact us.”

The RCMP detachment can be reached at 250-364-2566 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
