A combined Trail/Nelson team will represent the Kootenays when the BC Senior Women’s Curling Championships begin February 15-21 in Richmond.

Team Matthews, consisting of skip Marnie Matthews and third Rose Beauchamp of Trail and second Carol Bennettt and lead Cathy McLeod, both of Nelson, recently defeated Heather Nichols of Castlegar to capture the zone berth.

The score in the final was 7-5 for Matthews in Grand Forks.

Meanwhile, Garry Beaudry of Nelson, playing second, joined forces with Myron Nichol of Castlegar to claim the Senior Men’s Kootenay berth in Richmond.

After dropping the opener, Nichol, third Bill van Yzerloo and lead Richard Faunt, of Trail, ran off four straight wins — the final an 8-1 trouncing of Tom Shypitka of Cranbrook — to capture the zone title.

Nichol won a nailbiter, 5-4, in the A-B final scoring a single in the extra end.

Also heading to Richmond is former Brier reps, Fred Thomson of Nelson and Don Freschi of Trail as part of the Bob Ursel rink.

Ursel won the Okanagan Zone title recently in Enderby.

Rounding out the team is Dave Stephenson and fifth, Garry Vandenberghe.

The Senior Women’s and Men’s Curling Championships are held at the same time at the Richmond Curling Club.
