The flood of sirens and police cars descending on lower Gyro Park concluded with the arrest of man for assault Friday afternoon said a Nelson Police media release.

“A local man was arrested and charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest and obstruction after an incident in the lower Gyro Park area,” said Acting NPD Sergeant Matt Caldwell in the media release.

Caldwell said one officer responding to a by-law complaint was assaulted while the other responding officers rendered assistance and the male was finally taken into custody following a brief struggle.

“There were minor injuries to the Officers and the subject male,” Caldwell said.

The incident remains under investigation.

A busy week for NPD and bears

Caldwell said Nelson Police are still experiencing a great number of calls for bears in the City.

Caldwell said the bears are now being seen in all corners of the city and in greater frequency.

“In a disturbing trend, officers who respond to these complaints are often locating garbage left out, fruit trees not managed and other food sources negligently left as an attractant to bears,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said in order to ensure that bears maintain their wild nature, the Nelson Police Department is asking for more diligence in avoiding bear problems through responsible garbage and fruit tree management.

Failure to comply could get you a by-law violation with penalties of up to $300.

Weapons Offences lead to a weekend in jail

Caldwell said a West Kootenay man in his 20’s, remains in Nelson Police cells for the weekend after a series of weapons calls.

“The male, who is well known to police, was remanded into custody after earning eight criminal charges,” Caldwell explains.

“Although alarming, the risk to the general public was minimal and contained.”

Caldwell said limited information is available at this time as the investigations continue.
