Clothesline Project returns to Castlegar
The Clothesline Project is happening on May 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This annual event brings awareness to the issue of violence within our community. This project recognizes victims and survivors of domestic abuse as well as those who have experienced other forms of violence. The Clothesline Project highlights the supports within our community and encourages conversations on this important issue which could impact anyone.
We can help prevent violence and break the cycle of abuse by encouraging more understanding, acceptance and respect for one another. Castlegar and District Community Services Society together with partner agencies promote healthy and respectful relationships. You can make a difference!
Statistics Canada found that over 50 % of women in BC have experienced physical or sexual violence since the age of 16…that’s more than one million women in our province. Findings show that almost one third of Canadians reported experiencing childhood physical and/or sexual abuse. Aboriginal children are nine times more likely than non-aboriginal children to have experienced sexual assault in Canada. Other studies show that one in three women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime. Less than ten percent of women experiencing sexual violence reach out to police with prosecution rates being even lower.
For the clothesline display children, youth and adults have painted t-shirts to express their feelings and thoughts about the issue of violence.
We welcome you from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Millennium Park Concession on Wednesday, May 30. There will be speakers, life performances, displays, information tables and resources, food and beverages.
