A Trail man who was supposed to be serving a sentence for failing to comply with a probation order, and theft under $5,000, made sure local police got their exercise after leading cops on a chase of roughly one-and-a-half kilometres this morning, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

The man had been at large since his conviction required his appearance on April 1, 2019.

“On May 1, at 10:45 a.m. the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP General Duty constable was on a routine patrol when he spotted a 35-year-old year male of Trail, (who) was wanted by the police for being unlawfully at large.

“The suspect had failed to attend the Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment for his intermittent weekend sentence that began in early April 2019 and had a warrant issued for his arrest.

“The suspect fled on foot after being spotted by the police officer,” Wicentowich continued. “The suspect lead the police officer, and two other police officers, on a lengthy “cat-and-mouse” style chase that started on Groutage Avenue and ended on the 1300 block near Second Avenue.”

Wicentowich said the suspect resisted arrest before being captured and taken into custody.

“The Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP will be pursing criminal charges against the 35-year-old male suspect which include being Unlawfully at Large contrary to Section 145(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada and for Resisting Arrest contrary to Section 129 of the Criminal Code of Canada.”
