The culmination of over 13 years of planning, proposals, grant writing, and construction will be coming to fruition next Friday as the Christina Living Arts Centre hosts it’s grand opening.   This official ceremony will mark the region’s first Leadership in Energy and Ecological Design (LEED) building which will house Canada’s first LEED artisan’s gallery.   The project is the end result of the community’s vision for a park and welcome centre for the region. The facility will also house a visitors information centre, cafe with internet lounge, a performance space, meeting rooms and offices, – all built to the highest “green” standards which will be an educational showcase of green building techniques. The building is not only LEED certified, but it also houses the regions first solar aquatics system, a sustainable water management facility, that will be purifying all the Centre’s effluent in a greenhouse using biological methods with plants and microbes.  The grand opening of the Christina Living Arts Centre will be at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 6. The Centre is located in the Christina Lake Community Park on Highway 3, just east of the Christina Creek Bridge.  The Centre is a joint project of the Christina Lake Chamber of Commerce, Christina Lake Arts & Artisans Society, and the Regional Districk of Kootenay-Boundary. Funding has come from grants from Western Economic Diversification, Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust, regional gas tax, private donations, and a Towns for Tomorrow grant. Nearly all of the $1.7 million has gone back into the local economy through the hiring of local contractors and using local suppliers.   The previous evening will be a fundraising gala evening “Fundival 2010”, which helps to equip the gallery and educational spaces of the Centre.
