Grizzly problem in South Nelson taken care of

An un-bear-able situation has just gotten a little better for some Nelson residents.
The last of the three grizzly bears that had taken up residence in Rosemont and South Nelson have been caught and taken out of the area.
Using a standard trap, the adult female was caught while the two younger grizzly bears were snared in two other traps, said Nelson Police Department’s Sgt. Pat Severyn.
All three were caught near the end of Creek Street on Friday night and early Saturday morning. Conservation officer Len Butler then removed the bears from the area, and measured and tagged them for information.
The bears were removed as a family group to an area deep in the backcountry away from any population.
“It’s always nice to be able to trap and move such majestic animals and not have to destroy them,” said Sgt. Severyn. “We hope the bear issues are back under control again as it’s been a little hectic dealing with the grizzly family.”

Cyclist in critical condition
A 27-year-old man crashed into a wall on his bicycle and suffered a serious head injury on Saturday afternoon, and had to be rushed to Kelowna General Hospital.
It is believed the man suffered a brain injury when he lost control of his bike on the curve in 400 block of Cedar Street, and crashed into a wall.
He remains in critical condition with life threatening injuries.
The cyclist was not wearing a helmet and alcohol was involved in the accident. The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
Police remind cyclists that any rider caught riding a bike without a helmet will be charged and receive the appropriate fine under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Police are expected to be stepping up their helmet enforcement.
Punch drunk and new to Nelson
A man new to Nelson thought the best way to introduce himself to Nelsonites was to get drunk and punch out the window of a parked vehicle.
Late Saturday night the severely intoxicated man — recently moved from Vancouver — was walking to a residence in Rosemont when he decided to punch out the window.
He smashed the window and in the process cut his wrist badly.
As police arrived and emergency services — both ambulance and fire — were called in, the man proved to be belligerent and uncooperative with ambulance staff.
As a result, after receiving medical care, he ended up in the Nelson Police Department lock up for the night.
He was released to appear in Nelson Provincial Court at a later date.
