A 19-year-old man from Golden has been arrested and charged in the recent incidents in Nelson of a man propositioning women on the street for sex.

Although he has been released on bail, the man, now living in Nelson, was arrested and charged Tuesday by Nelson Police with Section 152 of the Criminal Code with invitation to sexual touching, and Section 173 (1) (b) of the Code under indecent act.

Complaints were received over the last two months of a man driving up to women in a mini-van and asking them for sex, the Nelson Police Department reported.

Late last week Nelson police identified a person of interest in the case. Police had received 12 complaints over the past five weeks of a man driving up to women and asking for, and sometimes outright demanding, sex.

He was described as a caucasian male in his mid-20s, with dark hair (no facial hair), a very pale complexion, and a lisp. He’s driving a newer-style, teal minivan.

“After the information was first released to the public, the suspicious activity stopped, but several more women (then) came forward with similar allegations,” NPD Sgt. Grant said last week.

The young man is scheduled to appear in Nelson Provincial Court on Feb. 8, 2011.
